Have you heard the saying, ‘The energy flows where the attention goes’? This one is quoted in so many circumstances from physical healing to emotional intelligence and habit management. Those of you who do Yoga will know how to direct the powerful oxygen you breathe straight into any specific area of your body. All the time you will be holding a picture of that area of your body in your mind and holding your focus on the physical position of the part you want to send the energy to. If you have a pain in your body you can send your energy, through oxygen, to that pain and the energy will clear the pain. When you are preparing your body for a sport and you are working hard to increase your physical performance, you will have a picture in your mind, again while you focus on your body. You will be sending the energy to improve your physical performance to those areas of your body that you want to improve. Always you will find that the improvement will follow your focus. This is all about having a positive impact on your physical body, it is a tried and tested way of healing and improving your body.
This same concept is happening constantly and unconsciously to your emotional and psychological state. So how does that work and how can you use this to your benefit every day?
When you can understand the concept of how your attention can focus on some aspect of your physical or emotional presence you can really make this work for you. Really start to become aware of what you are doing when you are bringing your attention to any part of your body. This is something you do unconsciously. For example, when you have been working for a long time at your computer, you decide to take a break, suddenly you become aware of the tension in your shoulders, from sitting at the computer, so you start to stretch your neck and move the shoulders and breathe into the pain and of course, the tension starts to release. Now apply the same concept to your emotional state and see how it works. For example, when you are out to dinner with your close friends and you are all really enjoying the company and the stories and the laughs, you notice how you are feeling so good and this in turn generates a happy contented energy within you, the result is then that you laugh more and chat more and have an even better time.
This is the sequence of events when we focus on the good things happening to us. Unfortunately our focus can very often be on the negative issues and feelings we are having and when this happens we immediately generate more negative feelings. So for example, when you are expected to stand up and do a presentation in front of a large audience, or some very important people, you get really well prepared, turn up on time, nothing should go wrong, until you stand up and look at these people. Right away you think about how you look, how you sound, how you feel so incompetent, how you are frightened, how you don’t want to look stupid, how you really hope they cannot see how nervous you feel. And so it goes on. As soon as your focus goes on the negative, right away that is where your energy will go and that is exactly what you will generate more of. You unconsciously will generate more of the same, simply by focussing on the negative.
Can you change this? Can you stop this happening? The answer is yes you can change this and you can stop it happening. This is one area we work on in the Confidence Proof Your Life Programme. Giving life and energy to these negative emotions can really damage your confidence and unfortunately this can be at really crucial moments. A few simple steps can change this around and create positive support to get you through a difficult situation and when you master it you will be able to work through anything.
This is about managing the negative state you are in by introducing a positive state and focusing on that so that it will take over from the negative.
First you can visualise the challenging situation you are anticipating. Notice the negative emotions this is creating. Ask yourself, what resources do I need to get me through this? What positive emotional or psychological state do I need to be in to get through this? You can think about a time when you will have done something successfully, notice the emotional strength you had when you were performing that task. Be aware of the emotional and physical state that brings up for you, feel it, know what it looks like, what it sounds like, really get to know the strong confident state you have used in the past.
Now, visualise the challenging task you have ahead of you. When you get to the most worrying part, stop and remember the positive and confident state you had brought up. Really take yourself back to that state and feel how being in that state can change how you would perform the challenging task. Visualise working through the challenging task while in that emotionally confident state. Now you can practice this before you have to deal with your challenge for real.
The impact this has is that you begin to bring your focus to the positive state you have remembered instead of focussing on the negative state you are in. By focussing on the positive state you will continue to generate more of the positive emotions and this will continue while your focus keeps the positive state in your consciousness.
In simple terms your positive attitude is following the path of your attention.
You will have sourced a positive experience in similar circumstances and you will practice that until you can easily bring it back. This will in turn give you the confidence to change your potentially negative state into a positive state and boost your confidence. You will be practicing being confident and the source will have come from within yourself.
